PRESS RELEASE

Silent Dialogues: Multimedia Portraits Throughout Time

ACG ART GALLERY 03/12/2008-30/06/2009

Opening at 20:30 on Wednesday, 3 December 2008

On Wednesday, 3 December 2008, at 20:30 The American College of Greece will celebrate the opening of Silent Dialogues: Multimedia Portraits throughout Time, an exhibition of works from the ACG Art collection, curated by the College's Art Curator, Megakles Rogakos. The exhibition coincides with the inauguration of the ACG Art Gallery, a new 330 m² exhibition space at the College's campus (6 Gravias Street, Aghia Paraskevi).

"Upon encountering appealing visual art visitors are inspired to engage in ways dictated by pure instinct. This metaphysical communion, which develops organically between artwork and viewer, leads to 'silent dialogues'," Megakles Rogakos writes in the catalog that accompanies the exhibition. He adds: "Portraiture is a central subject matter in art and happens to be one of the ACG Art collection's strengths."

Silent Dialogues showcases 250 portraits by old as well as contemporary artists. Among the earliest artworks on display are an Egyptian faience Ushabti of 1000 BC, and an archaic porous stone Kouros Head from 600 BC, while among the latest are videos by contemporary artists, some of which have just been completed. The exhibition covers all art forms, ranging from painting to photography, electronic sculpture, or installations. The exhibition's accompanying catalog is available for free upon request.

The exhibition is enriched with contemporary music composed especially for the occasion by the noted composer Theodore Abazis.

Silent Dialogues is part of the inaugural events celebrating the appointment of Dr. David G. Horner as President of The American College of Greece, and the assumption of the position of Chancellor by former President Dr. John S. Bailey.

Silent Dialogues runs Monday through Friday, 12:00 - 21:00, till 30 June 2009.

Synopsis

Heterotopia is the phenomenon of an organism developing in an unexpected location.
The documentary is unraveling the personality of Manolis Giankos, 2001 World Champion in Deep Sea Diving. His athletic activity in such an extreme physical environment shaped vigorously both his body and mind.
As the 23 year old Manolis is saying “Strange as it seems, the more you get involved, the more able you are to look inside yourself.Everything can change, and a man at sea - especially under the surface - can never be sure everything will go as planned. It is something above his power, and something he cannot control. It's not dry land, the surroundings he is familiar with; this fact alone makes you think differently about the way you deal with situations and people.”
Following the diver in his amazing deep blue world, we feel the innate need of man to go against the impossible, and the joy of succeeding in it.
